| Statement of Purpose: |
The mission of Project Education South Sudan (PESS) is to help fund and support the building of primary schools in rural South Sudan. PESS emphasizes the inclusion of girls and women in the educational opportunities it promotes. PESS fosters community empowerment and leadership development in order to ensure that educational progress is sustainable.
Since 2005, PESS has overseen and helped fund the construction of three new schools and the rebuilding of an existing deteriorating structure in three rural villages in Jonglei State. These schools serve about 3,000 children; one of them, Ayak Anguei Primary Boarding School with 450 girls, is presently the only operating girls’ school in the area. With a view to promoting school attendance and economic development, PESS has donated water wells, commercial grinding mills, cinderblock-making equipment, sewing machines and annual school supply money to the villages where the schools are located. Beyond brick and mortar, PESS provides indigenous community and girl’s leadership development, teacher training, feminine hygiene health and income literacy.
Partnership with the community is the foundation for success. PESS meets with local groups and leaders to collaboratively decide on building projects. All completed structures belong to the community, which donates the needed land and some unskilled labor. More skill intensive construction is performed by Sudanese contractors and workers funded by PESS and its partners. PESS employs a former Sudanese “Lost Boy” as its South Sudan Director to monitor and assess programs and strengthen ties with the community. PESS follows the UNICEF accountability model in funding projects, inspection and verification of spending. |
