Statement of Purpose: Spina Bifida is the most permanently disabling birth defect in the United States. It is more common than cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis, and muscular dystrophy COMBINED! Spina Bifida occurs when the spine of the baby fails to close during the first month of pregnancy. The effects of Spina Bifida are different for each person and there is no known cause. There are 65 million women of child bearing age in the United States who are at risk of giving birth to a child with Spina Bifida, yet it is estimated that 70% of all Spina Bifida births could be avoided if women were to take a sufficient amount of folic acid before becoming pregnant. Our Mission: To promote the prevention of Spina Bifida and enhance the lives of all affected by Spina Bifida in the Rocky Mountain region. Our Vision: People living with Spina Bifida thrive in a barrier free world that offers ready access to resources, education, support and community engagement. Their individual life choices are not impeded by Spina Bifida and they all experience rich and fulfilling lives. We were founded in 1971 by a group of parents/families looking to build a community of support for those living with Spina Bifida. Some of those early founders went on to establish the Spina Bifida Association of America.
